What is Boswellia Serrata?
Boswellia serrata — Indian frankincense — is a tree resin used in Ayurvedic practice, standardized in supplements to boswellic acids (AKBA is the most-studied fraction). Branded extracts such as 5-Loxin and Aflapin appear in much of the clinical research.
How it is used in supplements
Marketed for joint comfort, stiffness and mobility, usually inside multi-ingredient joint formulas alongside turmeric, ginger or hyaluronic acid.
What the research shows
Boswellia holds up better than most joint botanicals: several randomized trials in knee osteoarthritis report clinically noticeable improvements in pain and function scores versus placebo within 30–90 days, and systematic reviews rate the evidence as encouraging though limited by small trial sizes and industry sponsorship. It plausibly works through 5-lipoxygenase inhibition — an anti-inflammatory pathway conventional NSAIDs don't target. What it doesn't do: rebuild cartilage or alter disease progression; the demonstrated effect is symptomatic.
Typical studied amounts
Trials used 100–250 mg per day of enriched extracts (30% AKBA class) or up to 1,000 mg of standard extracts, typically split. Blend products rarely disclose which extract type or amount they contain.
Safety and side effects
Well tolerated in trials; GI upset is the main complaint. No serious safety signals at studied doses over trial durations.
Medication interactions
Theoretical additive effects with anti-inflammatory and anticoagulant medication; data is thin, so disclose use to a prescriber if on either.
Who should be cautious
Insufficient safety data in pregnancy. Inflammatory arthritis — hot, swollen joints, morning stiffness beyond an hour — needs rheumatological evaluation, not a resin extract; delaying diagnosis has permanent costs.
