What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a spice from the root of Curcuma longa; curcuminoids, especially curcumin, are its most studied compounds. Plain curcumin is poorly absorbed, which is why supplements often pair it with piperine (black pepper extract) or use specialized formulations.
How it is used in supplements
Turmeric supplements are marketed mainly around joint comfort, inflammation support, digestive comfort and general antioxidant benefits, and curcumin appears in many joint and mobility blends.
What the research shows
Human research is most developed for joint discomfort, where several trials report modest improvements with standardized curcumin extracts; study quality varies and formulations differ widely, which complicates comparisons. Evidence for most other marketed uses is preliminary. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health summarizes the state of the research.
Typical studied amounts
Trials on joint outcomes have commonly used standardized extracts in the region of 500–1,500 mg of curcuminoids daily, in divided doses, often with an absorption enhancer. Culinary turmeric contains only a small percentage of curcuminoids.
Safety and side effects
Generally well tolerated short term; digestive upset is the most common complaint. Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with some concentrated formulations, and turmeric can contribute to kidney-stone risk in susceptible people due to oxalate content.
Medication interactions
Curcumin may enhance the effect of blood thinners and can interact with drugs metabolized by certain liver enzymes. People on anticoagulants, and anyone scheduled for surgery, should discuss turmeric supplements with their clinician.
Who should be cautious
People with gallbladder disease, bleeding disorders, iron deficiency or upcoming surgery, and pregnant women considering supplemental (rather than culinary) doses, should seek medical advice first.
